The Ohio State Buckeyes 2027 recruiting class definitely started slow, but they are quietly changing their tune.
The Buckeyes have taken it easy early on, as some of the other programs aggressively pursued some of the initial three-star recruits available. Teams like Penn State made a major push early on in the offseason, while the Buckeyes took it slow and then began to strike.
So far in this recruiting cycle, Ohio State has gained commitments from three three-star recruits, including Jeremiah Smith's younger brother, Angelo Smith.
They nabbed eight four-star recruits from nearly every position, including 6'5 quarterback Brady Edmonds from Huntington Beach, California. Also included in that bunch are three offensive tackles and an edge rusher to solidify the lines of scrimmage.
Finally, at this point, the Buckeyes have one five-star commitment, who is regarded by most as the No. 1 recruit in the entire country. Defensive end DJ Jacobs, who the Buckeyes got from the heart of the SEC in Georgia, and he has the chance to be the next great pass rusher in Columbus.
They aren't done yet. Over the past couple of days, the Buckeyes have been linked to another signal caller, four-star recruit Dane Weber, four-star cornerback Gabriel Osborn Jr., and the big one, four-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert, who recently made big waves in the Big Ten.
Torbert was one of the big recruits that Curt Cignetti and the Indiana Hoosiers landed in this year's cycle. On Monday, he decommitted from the Hoosiers, and immediately, the Buckeyes became a logical pivot for the No. 10 corner in the class.
The way that Ohio State approaches recruiting is absolutely something to monitor in this cycle and the upcoming ones. They made a very conscious effort at the end of last year to wash a lot of their big-money young stars off their books.
College football was built off of recruits for all of it's history. That is changing now.
Recruits drive an expensive price tag but are rarely ready to play right away. The result is that teams have a lot of money invested in bench players instead of players making plays on the field.
That is a tough balance to strike between recruits and transfers, and the Buckeyes are learning their way through it. As it stands right now, Ohio State still has the No. 9-ranked class in the country according to 247 Sports.
In my opinion, they will continue to only go after the big fish in the class and make sure they are very selective with who they invest in. That is just the state of college football today.
