Nebraska Looks to Have a Top-100 Silent Commit

When there is smoke, there is often fire in the world of recruiting, and four-star wide receiver Mathew Gregory (6-foot, 175 pounds) from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, looks all but locked up for the Huskers. Gregory is currently ranked as the No. 97 player in the nation, the No. 17 wide receiver in the 2027 class, and the No. 7 player in the state of Pennsylvania. That makes him one of the biggest recruiting targets Nebraska has been in position to land in recent cycles.
Gregory is a big-time recruit in the 2027 class, with blue bloods like Notre Dame Fighting Irish football and Auburn Tigers football, as well as red-hot UCLA Bruins football, all hunting his commitment. He is also expected to be in Lincoln from June 12th through the 14th, and there is growing buzz that he could very well pull the trigger on a commitment to Nebraska during that visit. If the Huskers can seal the deal, it would be another major addition to an already talented class headlined by quarterback Trae Taylor.
More Ammo for Taylor
Taylor is without a doubt the gem of this recruiting class, and his name continues to attract talent to Lincoln. Gregory, if he commits to the Huskers, would join Tay Ellis and Kaden Howard in the class, giving Nebraska a potentially formidable trio of weapons for Taylor to unleash down the line for Matt Rhule’s squad.
Wide receiver has been a position Nebraska has struggled to consistently develop for the better part of a decade, but stockpiling elite talent is the first step toward changing that narrative. The Huskers are clearly making a statement on the recruiting trail that they intend to compete with the nation’s best again.
Hudson Is Gone… For Now
Nebraska also has not stopped recruiting the nation’s No. 1 tight end, Ahmad Hudson, even after his commitment to LSU Tigers football. Hudson is a phenomenal athlete who also excels on the hardwood, making him one of the most coveted prospects in the country.
In today’s recruiting landscape, losing a commitment is no longer the final chapter. Nothing is truly concrete until a player shows up for the first day of classes. And even then, the transfer portal has changed the game entirely. Relationships matter more than ever, and programs continue recruiting elite players long after commitments are announced.
Huskers Need Fall Redemption
Nebraska football finds itself in the doldrums after a disappointing finish to last season, and even a string of solid commitments and portal additions has not fully changed the national narrative surrounding the program.
The Huskers need the fall to arrive faster than most programs because the only thing that will truly shift perception is winning football games. Recruiting momentum helps keep hope alive, but eventually it has to translate onto the field.
Still, if Nebraska can continue stacking recruiting wins like this and keep building around Taylor, there is reason for optimism in Lincoln. The talent level is rising, and the staff continues to battle heavyweight programs for elite prospects.
Maybe there is still plenty of life left in this dog after all.
