Lane Kiffin decided to controversially jump ship from the Ole Miss Rebels to the LSU Tigers in the middle of the former’s CFP run to take over the open job in the hiring cycle that offered the most resources of anyone in the SEC. CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford made that point while explaining why the Florida Gators were still an attractive landing spot for Jon Sumrall, even if Baton Rouge is preferable to Gainesville for head coaches in 2026.

Crawford pointed out that the Gators had plenty of talent waiting there for Kiffin to retain, but also explained that LSU had the resources to help bring talent over from Ole Miss and elsewhere to build his roster.

“Outside of Kiffin at LSU, Sumrall inherits the SEC's best win-now opportunity among first-year coaches. More than two dozen transfers were necessary additions this cycle, but unlike many new staffs, Florida didn't rely heavily on talent from Sumrall's previous stop,” Crawford wrote.

UF had more to offer than the Tigers, but it’s clear Kiffin had every intention to import a large number of Rebels transfers to wherever he landed. LSU was a much more natural landing spot for recruits who’d followed Kiffin to Oxford, Mississippi, than Florida was through that lens.

The Tigers had the financial means to bring the top players Kiffin had coming from Ole Miss, and LSU was also more desperate to spend on a winner after trying so hard and failing with Brian Kelly at the helm for four years. That fired up the booster class to pay for win-now players like Arizona State Sun Devils transfer quarterback Sam Leavitt and Colorado Buffaloes transfer left tackle Jordan Seaton.

Why does LSU football have more resources than Florida?

While Louisiana State University doesn’t inherently have more resources than the University of Florida, the Tigers' football program will typically see more of an investment than the Gators for several reasons.

LSU doesn’t have to share the in-state talent with other Power 4 public universities. UF, meanwhile, has the Florida State Seminoles and UCF Knights to contend with, plus juggernaut private school The U. The Miami Hurricanes have become the preeminent recruiting power in the Sunshine State.

Local politics in Louisiana also make it easier for the Tigers to financially secure top talent. There is clearer language on how to monetize in high school in the Bayou than in the Swamp. Also, there's just more capital to win bidding wars in Baton Rouge.

These two historical programs will seemingly always be intrinsically linked. Florida beat LSU at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium en route to a title in 2006, while the Joe Burrow-led Tigers came out victorious in Death Valley in 2019 before winning it all. There are always important matchups between the two. Including in the coaching hiring realm.

This past hiring cycle, LSU made it clear that its brand has definitively passed UF’s with the Kiffin hiring. Sumrall, though, can work to change that on the gridiron with consistent success and a buy-in from fans and donors.
