Notre Dame is now much closer to finalizing both its 2027 and 2028 football schedules, with the school announcing a pair of moves. Notre Dame has added Stanford to its 2027 and 2028 schedules, and it added Kent State to its 2027 schedule. Notre Dame now has 11 games scheduled for both the 2027 and 2028 seasons.

The biggest move is the announcement from Notre Dame that it has extended its long-standing rivalry with Stanford for two more seasons. Notre Dame will play at Stanford to end the 2027 season and will host the Cardinal on October 14th at home in 2028. The rivalry was previously slated to end following the 2026 season.

Notre Dame holds a 25-14 all-time record against Stanford, and the Irish have won six of the last seven games in the matchup, including the last three games by an average score of 51.3 to 16.7. Notre Dame won the 2025 matchup by a 49-20 score on Stanford's home field.

With Stanford now extended the Irish will play five ACC teams during the 2027 season. That also includes Notre Dame beginning its 10-year schedule against Clemson, which will begin on October 7th in Notre Dame Stadium. The Irish also play a pair of Big Ten teams that season (Purdue, Michigan State), a SEC team (Auburn) and a Big 12 opponent (BYU) as well as its annual rivalry against Navy.

In 2028, Notre Dame will play six ACC opponents now that Stanford and Clemson are both on the schedule. The Irish also play three SEC opponents (Texas, Auburn, Arkansas), a Big Ten opponent (Purdue) and Navy.

The 2027 matchup between Notre Dame and Kent State will be a home contest for the Irish. It will also be the first matchup between the two programs. Notre Dame will host the Golden Flashes on October 2nd. It should be noted that Irish head coach Marcus Freeman coached at Kent State for two seasons early in his coaching career (2011-12).
