Ex-New York Giants coach Brian Daboll in the mix for Penn State job

On Monday, the New York Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll after a 2-8 start to the season, marking the third straight year the team has fired its head coach. The move was surprising to some, as the Giants have almost certainly found their quarterback of the future in Jaxson Dart, whom Daboll was adamant about drafting.

Although the former Giants head coach will receive payment for the remainder of his contract, Daboll will seek a new role with another NFL team or perhaps in college football.

Daboll's name has reportedly surfaced as a potential "wild card" candidate to fill the head coaching vacancy at Penn State University, reports Bruce Feldman of The Athletic.

One wild card in the mix is former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll, who was the offensive coordinator at Alabama in 2017 and helped lead the Tide to a national title. The 50-year-old is believed to have an interest in the job and is expected to get some consideration in Happy Valley.

It's difficult to envision Daboll securing a head coaching position with one of the other 31 NFL teams in the offseason. Consequently, his options may be limited to returning to a coordinator role or pursuing a head coaching position with a college football program.

While Daboll is likely to attract significant interest from NFL teams for offensive coordinator positions in the offseason, he may be better served by accepting a head coaching job at a major college football program should such an opportunity arise.

Penn State, which dismissed its head coach, James Franklin, a little over a month ago, would provide Daboll with an opportunity to remain in the Northeast for his next position and to rebuild his reputation for future NFL opportunities.
