The NFL has a standard that is set for players to participate in team activities during the season and offseason. Lane Kiffin is bringing that standard to LSU.
During an appearance on “Pardon My Take” that was published on Wednesday, Kiffin said he has a fine system in place that incentivizes players to do their jobs.
“With NIL and the portal, there’s a lot of problems that have been created,” Kiffin said, via a transcription from On3. “I think with them getting paid, I don’t think that’s as challenging. I don’t think it’s as challenging to get guys to do things because we’re paying you. If you don’t want to do it, there’s a fine system, just like the NFL. I find it’s actually easier.
“They kind of, in their mind, think they’re like pros now – which is good. That’s how we talk to them. So you’ve got high expectations.”

The new head coach of the Tigers will send players to general manager Billy Glasscock if players aren’t hiring the weight room or showing up to watch film.
“If you want to be a normal student and not really do all those things, that’s fine,” Kiffin said. “Go see the GM and give back half your money, if you want to do half the work. So that way, I think it’s a little bit easier that way.
“You bring them in, ‘Hey, this is what you need to do.’ And if you don’t, there’s a fine system for those things, but also, what’s going to happen at the end of the year? You’re going to get cut.”
Kiffin isn’t the only college coach to implement a fine system. Colorado head coach Deion Sanders is set to fine players for missing team activities.
The difference between what Kiffin and Sanders are doing and what the NFL does is that players in the league have a union. The NFLPA agrees to terms for fines with the league.
Players in college football don’t have a labor union. As NIL expands and the transfer portal blooms, college football needs to create a body that can enforce contracts, keeping players from getting out of their contracts early by joining another school for more money.
On the labor side, players might create a union to standardize how fines are doled out.
