Will Lane Kiffin stay at Ole Miss or take Florida job? Latest news, updates, coach rumors
NCAAF College Football News, Photos, Stats, Scores, Schedule & Videos...
It’s the Lane Kiffin Bowl as Ole Miss football plays host to Florida in Week 12.
Kiffin’s name has been tied to the Florida opening since Billy Napier was fired Oct. 19, along with the LSU opening and this week the New York Giants job in the NFL.
The No. 7 Rebels (9-1, 5-1 SEC) are positioned to make the College Football Playoff and beating Florida (3-6, 2-4) on Nov. 15 (6 p.m., ESPN) would get them another step closer to their first appearance. If the season ended today, Ole Miss would be a No. 7 seed in the CFP and have a home matchup against Texas.
Here’s the latest on what’s been going on leading up to the Ole Miss vs Florida game.
How Ole Miss football can keep Lane Kiffin away from Florida
The waiting game is a dangerous one in the 2025 college football coaching carousel. Florida, LSU or any other school that attempts to hire Lane Kiffin away from Ole Miss will have to risk losing musical chairs.
The CFP represents a chance for Kiffin to do something special in Oxford. It also represents a chance for the season to drag on.
Time is the underlying component to the multi-school Lane Kiffin pursuit. If the Rebels can get to a real-life victory formation or two in the College Football Playoff, it may also help run out the clock on Florida and other teams vying to hire Kiffin.
What Lane Kiffin said about coaching decision timeline
What is the timeline for Kiffin’s decision on his coaching future?
“I don’t know,” Kiffin said Nov. 10. “I’m not that far down the road. I said it last week and you guys think I was joking, during South Carolina. Everyone wants to talk about other jobs and everything. I think you are two, three weeks away from coaching for your own job.”
What Lane Kiffin’s son Knox Kiffin said about dad’s coaching future
Lane Kiffin’s son Knox Kiffin is a sophomore quarterback for the Oxford High Chargers. In an interview with Rivals, he said people asking him about what his father is going to do gets old.
“It’s definitely a little bit annoying but I understand, they want to know,” Knox Kiffin told Rivals. “I don’t know anything about it and I don’t think he’s really worried about anything. He’s just trying to go to the playoffs.”
“I don’t think he’s worried about any of that until after the season,” Knox Kiffin said in the interview.
What Ole Miss players said about Lane Kiffin to Florida rumors
Ole Miss football players are focused on blocking out external noise. There’s more of it to contend with this week.
“We’re just ignoring it,” receiver Cayden Lee said Nov. 11. “We’re not listening to any outside noise. We’re just focused on what we have in the building.”
Would Lane Kiffin take Giants job to coach Jaxson Dart again?
Lane Kiffin’s name was listed on hot boards after New York Giants coach Brian Daboll was fired Nov. 10. Former Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart is a rookie on the Giants roster.
Dart played three seasons under Kiffin at Ole Miss from 2022-24.
The pairing of Dart and Kiffin was a tremendous combination. Dart is the all-time passing leader at Ole Miss.
Kiffin went 5-15 as the Oakland Raiders coach in 2007-08. He has not addressed the Giants opening.
What Lane Kiffin said about coaching job priorities before Florida-Ole Miss
Kiffin revealed his No. 1 factor that decides what makes a job good on Nov. 10.
Kiffin said the priorities around what makes a job good have shifted.
“People used to say facilities,” Kiffin said. “Practice field. Those things. I think that’s changed, and it’s going to change. It’s going to be, ‘How much NIL do you have? How is your collective? How is it run? How much do you have?'”
What Lane Kiffin said about Florida, Ole Miss fans feuding over where he coaches
Kiffin said he doesn’t think Florida fans will cheer for him when the Rebels play the Gators.
“I don’t think (fans will cheer),” Kiffin said Nov. 9. “I think that people run pretty true to their schools when it comes to cheering in the game.”
Kiffin coached at FAU from 2017-19 before taking over at Ole Miss, and has been open about his reverence for former Florida coach Steven Spurrier. It’s why Kiffin wears a visor on the sidelines.
What is Lane Kiffin’s salary and why did his contract get extended?
Ole Miss’ win against Oklahoma on Oct. 25 triggered an automatic contract extension for Kiffin.
Because it was Ole Miss‘ seventh regular season win, Kiffin’s state contract with the Ole Miss Athletic Foundation will be automatically extended one year on Jan. 1, 2026. Kiffin’s contract now runs through Dec. 31, 2031.
The added year will be worth $9 million with $7.2 million guaranteed.
Kiffin’s $9 million salary is tied for No. 6 in the SEC.
Lane Kiffin buyout
As of Dec. 1, 2025, if Ole Miss fires Kiffin without cause, he would be set to receive $36.6 million.
It is the No. 15 most expensive buyout out of the 105 USA TODAY Sports could review and No. 7 in the SEC.
