Georgia football has positioned itself for a chance at an SEC championship game bid, but a game against Texas stands in the Bulldogs’ way in Week 12.
A loss to the No. 10 Longhorns would complicate things.
Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton has been one of the most efficient passers in college football in his first season as starter, passing for 2,040 yards with 15 touchdowns to two interceptions this season while completing 69.4% of his passes. He also had 321 rushing yards and seven scores.
Simply put, the Bulldogs likely need to win out to have a chance at reaching the title game.
Here’s a look at Georgia’s SEC championship game berth scenarios with three games left in the regular season.
SEC championship game berth scenarios for Georgia
Here’s a look at what Georgia needs to reach the SEC championship game:
- Win out in conference play: It’s very unlikely for Georgia to make the SEC championship game if it loses its final conference game against Texas in Week 12.
- Texas A&M loses one game: Georgia’s best path is rooting for Texas to beat Texas A&M. One-loss Georgia would likely get in over one-loss Texas A&M and one-loss Ole Miss due to conference opponent winning percentage.
- Alabama loses two SEC games: This seems unlikely, but Georgia would need Alabama, which is undefeated in SEC play, to drop its final two conference games against Oklahoma and Auburn to get in over the Crimson Tide.
It’s very likely that Alabama wins one of its final two conference games against Oklahoma or Auburn to secure a spot in the SEC championship game, leaving Texas A&M, Georgia, Ole Miss and Texas as the other top contenders for the second spot in the title game.
Despite Texas A&M being undefeated this season, the Aggies will need to beat Texas to reach the title game. Georgia and Ole Miss also need some help, whereas Texas, which has a difficult final stretch of games, can win out and reach the title game.
