Rutgers football has added a new long snapper to its roster, as former Southeastern long Snapper Talan Shields has committed to the Scarlet Knights. His commitment comes not too long after he made the trip up to campus on May 11th, according to The Knight Report.
Shields did not play during his one season at Southeastern, as he decided to redshirt. After the season ended, Head Coach Adam Waugh ended up stepping down from his position due to health reasons. It was following this decision that Shields decided to enter the transfer portal.
Shields held offers from schools such as Delaware State, Hampton, New Hampshire, and New Haven in addition to Rutgers since entering the Transfer Portal in January.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound transfer played his high school ball at Tarpon Springs High School in Tarpon Springs, Florida. He was rated as a 4.5-star recruit and the No. 123 overall-ranked long snapper recruit per RubioLongSnapping.com coming out of the 2025 recruitment class.
Shields joins a team that has always put a special emphasis on special teams under current head coach Greg Schiano. Despite some miscues last season, the Knights are known to have one of the better special teams units in the country, providing Shields with a good opportunity to refine his game.
