The biggest college football news of the day on Tuesday was not directly related to USC, but rather LSU. Yesterday, the Tigers announced that former head coach Ed Orgeron will returning as a special assistant on new head coach Lane Kiffin’s staff.

Of course, Kiffin and Oregon have shared USC ties, having worked together for the Trojans on two separate stints. From 2001-2004, the two were assistants together on Pete Carroll’s staff. During that time, the program won two national championships.

When Kiffin returned to USC as the head coach in 2010, he brought Orgeron with him to serve as defensive line coach. After Kiffin was fired a month into the 2013 season, Orgeron served as the Trojans’ interim head coach for the remainder of the regular season.

During the nearly 13 years since, the two have followed different paths. Orgeron served as the head coach at LSU from 2016-2021, leading the Tigers to the national championship in 2019. Kiffin, meanwhile, had stints as the head coach at Florida Atlantic and Ole Miss, before controversially leaving the Rebels for LSU this past fall.

When LSU takes the field for its season opener, it will mark the first time that Kiffin and Orgeron share the same sideline since USC visited Arizona State on September 28, 2013 in the infamous “tarmac game”. It is hard to know what to expect from the two coaches reuniting once again, but for college football fans, it should be a whole lot of fun.
