Colorado football got a major recruiting boost this week when blue-chip safety Gabe Jenkins committed to the Buffaloes, giving Deion Sanders’ 2027 class a sharper edge and lifting the program in the Big 12 rankings. The commitment also marked Colorado’s second four-star addition in the cycle, a sign that the Buffaloes are starting to stack blue-chip talent on the defensive side.
According to 247Sports, Jenkins helped raise Colorado’s average recruit rating to 87.8, which moved the Buffaloes into second place in the Big 12 among teams with more than one commitment. Colorado now trails only Texas Tech, which sits at 91.89 after landing five-star defensive lineman Jalen Brewster. Before Jenkins announced his commitment to Colorado, the Buffaloes were sitting at 87.25 and would have ranked behind Arizona State.
The next step is volume. Colorado has six commitments so far, while Big 12 rivals at the top of the rankings have more completed classes. Texas Tech has nine, West Virginia has 11 and Kansas State has 10, showing how much ground Colorado still needs to cover. Sanders typically keeps his high school recruiting classes small, so it remains to be seen how many more commitments Colorado will attempt to land.
Still, the quality is there, and that is what matters. Jenkins joins four-star quarterback Andre Adams in the class, along with three-star additions Will Rasmussen, Ba’Roc Willis, Kenny Fairley and Devon Dericho. The defensive haul gives Colorado a solid foundation, and after a busy recruiting weekend in Boulder on May 15, more movement could be coming.
