Recruiting Roundup: 4-star CB discusses why he committed to Michigan Football

The Michigan Wolverines are hot on the recruiting trail, as their 2027 class now holds 12 commits as of this writing. Let’s catch up on the latest in today’s Recruiting Roundup.

Latest commit breaks down decision

The latest commitment for the Wolverines is four-star cornerback Darius Johnson, who announced his decision on Monday. He has been happy with the transparency he has seen from Kyle Whittingham and the new Michigan coaching staff.

“What stood out was really just the conversations with all the coaches and them keeping it real and breaking down my film and telling me how they see me fitting in their defense,” Johnson told 247Sports’ Blair Angulo ($). “The facility and stadium for sure stood out a lot to me, too. Coach Jernaro Gilford’s biggest pitch has been about development and trust. He’s big on building that relationship and making sure I know I’d be coming into a place that’s going to push me and prepare me for the next level, on and off the field.”

Johnson is the first cornerback and the ninth four-star prospect in the 2027 class to commit to Michigan so far.

Former Indiana commit sets sights on Michigan

2027 four-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert Jr. committed to Indiana back in January, but he has picked up numerous intriguing offers since then. He decided to decommit from the Hoosiers earlier this week, and Michigan is now firmly in the mix.

Now that Torbert is exploring his options, he has set official visits to Michigan, Ohio State and Notre Dame.

“I’m excited about all these schools,” Torbert told Rivals ($). “I’m not leaning towards one more than others. I’m excited to see where this process goes and where I’m going to end up.”

The Wolverines have built a reputation for having a great defense, and that is something that attracts Torbert to the program.

“The new defensive staff,” he added. “Defensive guru, the DC coach Jay Hill. Michigan is a powerhouse, they’re always good. The DC/corners coach I have a great relationship with him. Then you have a Cincinnati coach over there in coach Coombs. Michigan it’s a defensive powerhouse. If you want to be a great defensive player on the next level Michigan is a great spot.”

Torbert will be taking his official visit to Michigan the weekend of June 12.

2027 DL previews official visit

Maa’Imoa Havili has picked up a lot of momentum in his recruitment recently, as a good amount of top schools are starting to target the 2027 defensive lineman. Michigan is one of them, and Havili is taking an official visit next week. Defensive ends coach Lewis Powell has made a big impression on him.

“I love coach Powell,” Havili told The Michigan Insider ($). “I just found out the meeting with him on Thursday and on Sunday he was with our family! Coach Powell is really a good coach and I feel safe around him and he helps me out. Coach told me that Michigan is really that program for me to join and said how good their line up is going to be. Michigan can also help me reach the NFL, too.”

Havili and Powell seem to have a good relationship built already, and it should only get stronger during this official visit.

“We are heading down to Michigan next week,” Havili said. “It is an official visit. Michigan is a school that me and my pops are thinking about right now. Not only that, but I’ll have some one to always go to which is Coach Powell when I need something!”
