David Pollack praises Iowa football's Tom Moore hire

Earlier this month, the Iowa football program made a hire that was divisive amongst the fan base. Despite that, one former “College Gameday” host believes it will be a beneficial move.

The Hawkeyes hired former quarterback and longtime NFL assistant coach Tom Moore to join the staff as senior consultant to the head coach and offensive advisor. Moore brings a storied resume to the table, with nearly five decades of NFL experience to his name. He worked closely with both Peyton Manning and Tom Brady and was a respected voice in the locker room. The only drawback for some Iowa fans is his age.

Moore is 87 years old now. Even with his impressive track record, some fans are worried about an older offensive philosophy seeping its way into Tim Lester’s scheme. David Pollack set out to quench those fears last week.

Pollack, the former ESPN college football analyst, first-round NFL draft pick and two-time All-American at Georgia, had great things to say about Iowa’s hiring of Moore on his “See Ball Get Ball with David Pollack” podcast.

“He’s not running the day-to-day,” Pollack said. “He’s forgotten more football than 99.9% of the people on the planet… It doesn’t hurt like getting a guy like that, who doesn’t have a lot of responsibility, that can come in and try to help at a place he loves. Good for Iowa fans.”

Pollack makes a good point about Moore returning to his alma mater to try to help. Moore was a quarterback at Iowa in the late 1950s. There’s nothing he wants to do more than help his school have major success in what will most likely be his final season as a football coach.

While it’s fair to criticize the move at the time, there’s a better chance that Moore helps the offense at the end of the day than hurts it. Kirk Ferentz has been around the block a time or two. He knows what he’s doing. Fans will need to exercise some patience with this hiring.
