As Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian took shots at Ole Miss regarding class credits earlier this month, there was some thought from the opposing school that the coach should be punished for his comments. With Ole Miss urging the SEC to look into the comments from Sarkisian, the head coach would reveal if he’s received word about a forthcoming punishment.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Sarkisian would say that he was not reprimanded for the comments, even saying that some of them were “taken out of context.”
“Sark says he was not punished by the SEC (under its sportsmanship policy) for his comments about Ole Miss…Said it was more about Texas and the difficulties it faces with the portal/class credits,” Nicole Auerbach wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The main quote in question was showing Sarkisian undermining the academic merit of a degree at Ole Miss, saying someone can take a “basket weaving” class and get one from it.
“At Texas, we will only take 50% of a player’s academic credit hours,” Sarkisian said, via USA Today. “You may be a semester from graduating, but you’re going all the way back to 50% if you play here and want a degree. But at Ole Miss, they can take you. All you have to do is take basket weaving, and you can get an Ole Miss degree.”
Ole Miss wanted the SEC to reprimand Texas football’s Steve Sarkisian
In regard to what Ole Miss wanted the SEC to look at Sarkisian for, it was a SEC Bylaw that states that coaches ‘must avoid derogatory statements about another member institution’s education opportunities.”
“Ole Miss officials want to know if current SEC Bylaws 10.2.3 or 10.5.2 were violated,” Pete Nakos of On3 Sports wrote. “Bylaw 10.2.3 states: ‘Coaches and staff are required to advocate for the positive attributes of their own university and must avoid making derogatory statements about another member institution’s program, facilities, or education opportunities.’
It remains to be seen if Sarkisian gets punished by the SEC for the comments about Ole Miss, but his main focus is on improving the Longhorns after a disappointing 2025.
