When Jon Sumrall accepted the Florida Gators head coaching job, he still coached the Tulane Green Wave for three weeks.
When the Florida Gators hired Jon Sumrall as their head coach on November 30th, they knew the deal. He was going to coach for the Tulane Green Wave for the duration of their season, as they were primed to play in the College Football Playoff. Once they beat the North Texas Mean Green, it sealed their invitation.
Sumrall spent the next three weeks coaching at both institutions, which was a gutsy move. It isn’t exactly easy to coach one college football team, let alone two, but he did so for three weeks, and it wasn’t exactly easy.
Jon Sumrall comes clean about coaching two programs
While Sumrall appeared to do a good job from the outside looking in, he came clean about the process of coaching two programs at the same time.
“I was doing two jobs for three weeks. Dumbest thing I’ve ever done. Stupid. Full disclosure: it was a shit show.”

It certainly didn’t appear to be as difficult as Sumrall infers it to be, but it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise. He was working on trying to finalize two recruiting classes, including one that he had no connection to at Florida. Even so, he signed all but two members of Billy Napier’s commits.
Here’s where Sumrall’s comments could come into play. His success from the outside in handling both programs, but calling it a “shit show” should be a warning to anyone who wants to hire a coach who’s team is going to compete in the College Football Playoff. That’s not a standard approach, and honestly shouldn’t be considered again.
We already saw the Ole Miss Rebels prevent Lane Kiffin from coaching their team when he took the LSU Tigers job. With Pete Golding at the helm, the Rebels were a stones throw from a National Championship Game appearance.
Sumrall’s words are a warning shot to any team hiring a coach who could compete for a national championship.
