Every college football coach has seemingly been asked about their preference for the size of the College Football Playoff field. And Texas A&M football coach Mike Elko is seemingly tired of it.

Elko, who is entering his third year in College Station, led the Aggies to a CFP appearance last year as the No. 7 seed. And while a few years earlier, his team wouldn’t have been in the playoff, when it was limited to four teams, Elko doesn’t see a reason to talk about what he would like to see from the CFP anymore.

“I don’t know why you ask us. It doesn’t matter what we think,” Elko said, via On3’s Brett McMurphy. “I don’t know why we’re trying to become a trophy sport. What does Mike Elko want? 40. Then I won’t get fired. It’s OK to make it hard to get to the playoff.”

For the first 10 years of the CFP’s existence, the top four teams made up the field. Since the 2024 season, that number has been 12, and since the moment the field expanded, there have been nonstop conversations about more expansion. As a result, it has become a matter of ‘when’, not ‘if’, the CFP will include more teams.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey prefers to increase the playoff to 16 teams in the near future before almost certainly going to 24 teams. The Big Ten and most, if not all, of the other leagues around the sport have pushed for the field to double in size, completely bypassing a 16-team playoff.

At least for this coming season, though, the CFP will remain at 12.
