It’s always tough losing a starting quarterback, whether it be due to injury, graduation or, in the case of Darian Mensah, transferring.
Manny Diaz and Duke went through it unexpectedly this offseason when the quarterback, after leading the Blue Devils to their first outright ACC title since 1962, decided to transfer to conference rival Miami. It was at the very last minute, and left Duke in a spot where they had little chance to find a quarterback of Mensah’s quality.
In Athlon Sports’ ACC Coaches Talk Anonymously About Conference Foes for 2026, one head coach brings up the difficulty that Mensah’s late departure caused for Diaz and his staff.
“What’s so tough in this era is the timing of when Duke lost (quarterback Darian Mensah) to Miami. There’s no way that they thought they were going to lose him. So they didn’t replace him or get someone comparable because why would someone comparable come while he’s there? That’s a tough blow.”
Yes, an incredibly tough blow as Mensah had originally announced that he would return to Durham for his junior season after throwing for 3,973 yards and 36 touchdowns with just six interceptions in 2025.
Diaz was able to snag Walker Eget, a transfer from San Jose State, after Mensah’s departure, but it is unlikely that he will be able to replicate what Mensah brought to the Blue Devils’ offense.
