In the NIL era, chaos has become the norm across college athletics. Conferences are scrambling to adapt, the NCAA is fighting battles in court, and Congress keeps dipping into the business of college sports. For fans and coaches, the constant churn has become exhausting.
But one topic remains refreshingly straightforward. College Football Playoff expansion.
Unlike the legal fights involving lawyers, statutes, and appeals, the CFP debate is simple. Some conferences want to leap from a 12‑team field to 24, while others prefer staying at 12 or capping expansion at 16.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has been consistent throughout the process. He isn’t opposed to growth, but he wants real data before making a dramatic jump. His concerns go beyond the fear of a watered‑down postseason. Scheduling alone is a major sticking point. Last season, transfer portal chaos and coaching carousel news overshadowed actual playoff coverage, a sign of how crowded the calendar has become.
Still, Sankey hasn’t ruled out a 24‑team model. With the SEC now playing nine conference games, the league could produce more 9‑3 teams than ever before. A larger playoff would naturally increase the SEC’s chances of landing additional bids.
Fans, meanwhile, remain split. If you go by the temperature on X, 16 teams seems to be the sweet spot, big enough to include deserving teams, small enough to maintain meaning. Many point to last season as proof that even with 12 teams, only five or six felt like true title contenders.
For now, though, everything remains hypothetical. Sankey reiterated this week that no votes have been taken and no substantive discussions have occurred beyond surface‑level inquiries.
The future of the CFP is still up in the air and in a sport where everything else feels unsettled, that somehow feels fitting.
