Maybe some folks in college football are unhappy with the way Texas Tech built its roster last year. They shouldn't be. The brain trust in Lubbock used the system to its advantage to reach the College Football Playoff. Ambition in college sports is usually praised, not frowned upon.

But if there is a philosophical battle between the Red Raiders and the big school in Austin, most of the outside support would lean toward Tech.

Certainly, the folks at Texas realize they are not popular with the vast majority of college football. The school ran over the Big 12, then left for the SEC. There is a sense of superiority in Austin that is not celebrated in Norman, Lincoln, Waco, Stillwater and most other schools that were part of the old Big 12.

Despise might be the most appropriate word.

But that doesn't mean dismiss. Texas has a fine football program with a talented coach, Steve Sarkisian, and one of the best quarterbacks in the land, Arch Manning.

If only the coach hadn't decided to pick on Texas Tech about its strength of schedule. Would have been easy enough for Sarkisian to avoid the subject. Except that doesn't seem to be his nature.

Tech coach Joey McGuire — quite a hoot — offered to pay the buyouts for his opener and Texas' opener so the Red Raiders could play the Longhorns in Week 1.

Of course it won't happen. Texas doesn't want to face the CFP-worthy Red Raiders in the first week when it hosts Top 5 Ohio State in Week 2.

No matter how this all gets resolved, let's hope the Longhorns and Red Raiders get together on the field as soon as possible. Too much to hope for the game to be in the 2026 CFP?
