North Carolina football will have to go back into the transfer portal to find another quarterback, as one of its players has decommitted, according to On3.
“BREAKING: Western Carolina transfer QB Taron Dickens has decommitted from North Carolina, Inside Carolina reports. Dickens passed for 3,508 yards, 38 touchdowns and 2 interceptions this season,” On3wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Dickens signed with North Carolina out of the portal in February and had plans to enroll this summer. The reason for him decomitting is because of academic reasons, according to sources from On3.
The Tar Heels already have several quarterbacks on their roster, including Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards and Texas A&M transfer Miles O’Neill. Both players competed for the starting quarterback job during the spring, along with Travis Burgess and Au’Tori Newkirk.
Dickens was a runner-up for the 2025 Walter Payton Award. Throughout his three years in college, he’s totaled 5,063 passing yards, 51 touchdowns and five interceptions.
Last month, North Carolina lost Marquis Bryant, a four-star cornerback and the 188th overall-ranked player by Rivals, as he backed out of his commitment to the program.
“I’ve thought about official visits, but I don’t have any scheduled right now,” Bryant said. “The goal is to open everything back up. I want to find the best fit for me, both as a player and academically. I will search for that while continuing to work on my craft.”
Though North Carolina has lost out on a few players, there should still be a big improvement from last year to this year.
