The 2027 NFL Draft looks like it could have a nice linebacker class. Notre Dame star Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa could be the most talented of them all.

Pros for Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa

  • Possesses a unique skill set to make plays as an inside linebacker, a blitzer, off the edge, or in space
  • He has an incredible feel when navigating traffic; he boasts great overall instincts as a player
  • When he plays downhill, Viliamu-Asa is a vicious hitter with a ton of pop in his pads
  • Has shown a variety of pass rush moves despite having limited reps working on the edge

Cons for Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa

He hasn’t played a large volume of snaps during his college career, especially in pass coverage

Can play a bit out of control as a pass rusher at times, lacking counter moves off initial rush

He’s coming off a torn ACL late in the 2025 season, unsure when he will be available to start next season

Background

Viliamu-Asa was considered to be a consensus four-star and top-100 player by each of the major recruiting platforms coming out of Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco in the 2024 recruiting class. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Viliamu-Asa ended up rated as the No. 41 overall player, the No. 4 linebacker, and the No. 4 player from the state of California for the class. He chose the Fighting Irish over offers from Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, Oregon, Texas, Tennessee, LSU, Texas A&M, Miami, USC, Auburn, Washington, UCLA, Louisville, Michigan State, Arizona, Boston College, Kansas, Oregon State, and Stanford, among others.

Despite walking into a crowded linebacker room, Viliamu-Asa earned immediate playing time as a freshman in 2024. During his two years as a main fixture at inside linebacker, he has managed to record 85 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss, four sacks, two interceptions, three pass breakups, and two fumble recoveries in 25 games. Viliamu-Asa is recovering from a torn ACL he suffered during the team’s win over Syracuse last season. When healthy, Viliamu-Asa is one of the more versatile linebackers in all of college football.

Player Evaluation

From a physical perspective, it doesn’t take long to find Viliamu-Asa on film. With a long frame and plenty of explosiveness, he is one of the rare players who can do pretty much anything he wants on the football field. Viliamu-Asa has seen time as a stacked linebacker over the last two years, as well as seeing reps on the ball as a pass rusher and in space. Boasting good eyes and instincts, Viliamu-Asa quickly diagnoses what’s happening in front of him, while also having the talent to navigate effectively through traffic. He has a unique skill set, which also allows him to rush off the edge. There is a world where Viliamu-Asa sees some reps as a MIKE, WILL, and SAM linebacker on the NFL level, and could make a major impact at any of them.

Outside of returning from injury, the biggest negative to Viliamu-Asa’s game is just a lack of opportunity. For whatever reason, Notre Dame hasn’t played him a high volume of snaps during his career, but that should change when fully healthy in 2026. With such a heavy reliance on his ability as a pass rusher and blitzer, Viliamu-Asa has had a limited number of chances in pass coverage. As a pass rusher, Viliamu-Asa is loose and nimble, but he can come a bit out of control at times. In total, he could serve to be a bit more of a patient player once the game slows down more.

Make no mistake about it, every “deficiency” that Viliamu-Asa has is something that can be fixed. The unteachables he possesses are eye-popping, and he very much possesses first round upside if he can get back healthy early in the 2026 season. All the tools are there to develop into a plus starter on the NFL level with Pro Bowl upside.
