The final Penn State football home game of one of its most turbulent seasons comes against one of its own.
And it will unexpectedly be played in prime time.
Senior Day against the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and their former Nittany Lion head coach Matt Rhule, will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday in Beaver Stadium. NBC, which will televise, announced details this weekend.
The Lions are coming off a streak-busting victory at Michigan State. The Lions, which has lost six-straight Big Ten games, pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the wayward Spartans, 28-10.
Penn State vs. Nebraska will be a remarkable confluence of storylines, considering the Lions’ epic slide, how both teams are running on backup quarterbacks and Rhule being an early figure in PSU’s ongoing head coaching search. (The former Lion linebacker and good friend of Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft recently signed a coaching extension at Nebraska).
The Cornhuskers (7-3, 4-3 Big Ten) were off last weekend after a critical 28-21 save against UCLA − their first full game without injured star QB Dylan Raiola.
Penn State (4-6, 1-6) will hope to honor its seniors with a second straight victory that keeps them in postseason contention. They would need to beat Nebraska and win at Rutgers on Nov. 29 to play in a game like the Pinstripe Bowl, like they did at 6-6 in 2014.
Nebraska holds a 10-8 all-time series lead over Penn State. It won the last meeting between the teams during the 2020 COVID season. The Lions will be led by redshirt freshman backup QB Ethan Grunkemeyer, who will be making his fifth college start following Drew Allar’s broken ankle in the homecoming loss to Northwestern.
Nebraska also will go with a freshman, TJ Lateef, who will make his second start after Raiola broke his fibula against USC.
