Georgia football didn’t officially lock up a spot in the College Football Playoff by knocking off Texas in their prime-time clash, but the Bulldogs came pretty close.
The 35-10 victory in Sanford Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 15, moved Georgia to 9-1 on the season.
The No. 5 Bulldogs could absorb a second loss and still be in great shape for the playoff.
They play 1-9 Charlotte, one of the worst FBS teams, next week before playing No. 12 Georgia Tech in Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Nov. 28.
ESPN gave Georgia a 99% chance to make the CFP with a win over Texas.
“We don’t really look at those type of things,” safety KJ Bolden said. “We try to take it week by week. We’re worried about Charlotte right now.”
That’s the kind of talk Kirby Smart would love to read.
“We don’t kind of look to the playoffs,” Bolden said. “We know if we keep winning … we’re proud of ourselves winning a big-time game like this. We don’t look to the playoff until we get there.”
Said outside linebacker Quintavius Johnson: “I’m not going to say we’re not looking forward to the playoff, but we’re not looking that deep into the playoff, you feel me? We’re worried about the next game, the next people we have up next.”
Georgia has made the CFP in 2017, 2021, 2022 and 2024, winning the national championship back-to-back in 2021 and 2022.
Georgia could still play in the SEC championship, but the teams in the Dec. 6 game in Atlanta won’t be determined until after Thanksgiving.
Georgia finished SEC play 7-1.
Texas A&M is 7-0 with a game at Texas Thanksgiving weekend.
Ole Miss and Alabama are 6-1.
Texas isn’t even entirely out of the playoff picture. It may have a case if it beats an unbeaten Texas A&M and finishes 9-3.
Texas edge rusher Colin Simmons thinks Texas is still a CFP team: “Of course, I have the utmost confidence in my team and we can still take over.”
