It seems like less than a month ago I was sitting here learning about and writing on S/LB Henry Sakalas. I wrote about how Max Bullough was leading a prominent charge to earn the commitment of the 6-foot-4, 205-pound defender out of La Grange Park, Illinois.
And it feels that way because it was just three weeks ago.
Now, three weeks later, Bullough's efforts have paid off as Sakalas has committed to Michigan State University. The news was first reported by Parker Titus, a college football recruiting source, through his account on X and shortly after by Sakalas himself.
This marks the ninth commitment for Michigan State's 2027 recruiting class and the second commitment following the program's first official visit weekend. LB Matthew Brady got the ball rolling by announcing his commitment on Wednesday.
Still, Spartan fans remained on the edge of their seats because just one day before Brady's commitment, Pat Fitzgerald posted two floating green Spartan helmets on social media, indicating that two commitments were on the way.
Now Spartan Nation knows exactly who that second player is.

It's the big-bodied defender who can line up all over the field and make impactful plays with his size, athleticism, and relentless pursuit of the football. Sakalas brings a physical style of play that fits exactly what Fitzgerald and his staff appear to be building in East Lansing.
With the Spartans now sitting at nine commitments in the 2027 class, let's refresh our memories on exactly who has pledged to Michigan State so far:
89 – Jack Carlson – OT – Brighton (Brighton, MI)
89 – Ohimai Ozolua – DL – St. Rita of Cascia (Chicago, IL)
88 – Grant Adloff – IOL – East Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids, MI)
87 – Eli Stumpf – QB – Big Walnut (Sunbury, OH)
87 – Henry Sakalas – S/LB – Nazareth Academy (La Grange Park, IL)
86 – Savior Owens – RB – Massillon Washington (Massillon, OH)
86 – Jack Schuler – EDGE – Bishop Watterson (Columbus, OH)
85 – Ty'ire Clark – S – St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, NJ)
85 – Matthew Brady – LB – Central Catholic (Bloomington, IL)
It's becoming increasingly easy to identify what Pat Fitzgerald and his staff are prioritizing in this recruiting cycle.
Sure, every position on the field is important. Winning football games requires a complete roster. But when you look at this commitment list, it becomes clear that Michigan State is placing a major emphasis on building the future foundation of its defense and offensive line.
Two defensive linemen, two offensive linemen, and three linebackers or safeties make up seven of the first nine commitments in the class.
That's a giant highlighter mark on something I've been saying for quite a while now.
If you look back at Fitzgerald's tenure at Northwestern, it's easy to understand how he believes football games are won. His teams are built to physically attack opponents from the opening whistle until the final snap. They play with discipline, toughness, and a relentless motor that wears opponents down over the course of a game.
His defenses remind me of the girl from Obsessed because they simply never let go. They stay attached to the players they're responsible for and constantly apply pressure. Fitzgerald's teams want to outwork you, out-hit you, and force you into mistakes. Once they create an opening, they attack it without hesitation.
That identity appears to be taking shape early in Michigan State's 2027 recruiting class.
The Spartans may not be loading up on five-star prospects at every position, but the players they are landing fit the culture Fitzgerald is trying to establish. These are prospects who seem willing to embrace hard work, physical football, and player development.
As more commitments continue to roll in, the blueprint is becoming clearer.
Pat Fitzgerald isn't simply recruiting talent. He's recruiting a specific type of football player, and through the first nine commitments of the 2027 cycle, Michigan State's future identity is starting to come into focus.
