Brendan Sorsby has won his most recent battle in court against the NCAA.
According to multiple reports, a Lubbock County judge has granted the Texas Tech quarterback the injunction that he was seeking in his legal battles against the NCAA, making him eligible to compete for the Red Raiders this upcoming college football season.
As part of the decision, The Athletic reported, Sorsby will miss Texas Tech's games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State to start the season. The first game he could play would be against Houston on Sept. 18 — Texas Tech's Big 12 opener.
The ruling can be appealed by the NCAA.
Sorsby stepped away from the program on Monday, April 27 to enter a residential treatment program for his gambling addiction that dated back to his true freshman season at Indiana in 2022. As a Hoosier Sorsby bet on his own team.
Sorsby placed at least 40 bets involving IU football while quarterback for the Hoosiers, used sportsbook accounts registered to a family member and friends to wager approximately $90,000 over four years and continued to gamble after transferring from UC to Texas Tech, according to ESPN.
His “wagering only intensified after the transfer,” attorneys for the NCAA said in court documents, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported on June 2.
Brendan Sorsby stats
Sorsby spent the past two college football seasons playing for the University of Cincinnati after two years at Indiana University.
Last season he threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns to just five interceptions. He completed 61.6 percent of his passes.
When is the NFL supplemental draft 2026?
Should Sorsby ultimately be ruled ineligible to play in college football, he could apply to enter the NFL's supplemental draft. While a date for the draft hasn't been set, the deadline to apply to enter is June 22, according to CBS Sports.
The NFL hasn't held a supplemental draft since 2019.
This story is developing.
