The Spartans have been a bit light at the wide receiver position in the 2027 recruiting class. Even with a top-40 recruiting class nationally, Jonathan Smith and the Michigan State Spartans have seemed focused on securing the future of their defense and offensive line while allowing the skill positions to sort themselves out.
Well, that changed this week.
For the first time in the 2027 recruiting cycle, a wide receiver has committed to Courtney Hawkins' receiver room. Michigan State earned a commitment from unranked wide receiver Zach Forbish out of Frisco, Texas, where he plays for Frisco Lone Star High School.
Forbish was made for speed. In fact, I might start dubbing him "Mach 5" because of just how fast he is. The talented receiver stands at 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, bringing a solid frame to go along with elite athleticism.
As a junior, Forbish hauled in 41 receptions for 820 yards. He truly separated himself by finding the end zone 12 times through the air, showcasing his ability to turn opportunities into points. That's something the Spartans could very well be looking for by the time Forbish is taking consistent snaps in East Lansing. He excels at turning catches into explosive touchdowns and has the ability to score from anywhere on the field.
His speed doesn't just show up on Friday nights. It also shines on the track.
As a sophomore, Forbish posted a season-best 200-meter time of 24.31 seconds, according to Athletic.net. He was also a member of Frisco Lone Star's Texas 5A state-qualifying 4×200 relay team, which placed fourth. Then, as a junior, he turned heads again by running a 10.9-second 100-meter dash.
The Spartans' wide receiver room will be led by incoming freshman Samson Gash this season, but after Gash there are still plenty of players with potential who have yet to fully prove themselves at the collegiate level. If Forbish can make an immediate impact when he arrives on campus, his speed alone could help propel him into becoming one of the more dangerous receivers in the Big Ten.
Michigan State beat out programs such as Pittsburgh, Wisconsin, and North Dakota State to secure a commitment from the speedy Texas receiver.
BREAKING: Michigan State has landed a commitment from 2027 Frisco (TX) Lone Star WR Zach Forbish during his official visit.

When watching Forbish's highlights, the same theme I've discussed throughout this article immediately jumps off the screen: speed.
His explosiveness simply overwhelms defenders. Time and time again, Forbish catches the football within five to ten yards of the line of scrimmage before turning on the Mach 5 boosters and hitting another gear. Once he gets into open space, defenders often have no chance of catching him.
That ability gives Forbish the opportunity to do several different things for Michigan State. Versatility is always valuable when trying to carve out a role in a storied program. With his ability to blow past defenders, don't be surprised if he earns opportunities as a return specialist and possibly even as a gunner on special teams. Both roles would allow him to put more quality film on tape while also getting his name in front of fans and, eventually, NFL scouts.
Michigan State now sits with the No. 39 recruiting class in the nation for 2027 as the coaching staff continues to impress recruits and secure commitments throughout the cycle. The Spartans are working tirelessly to build a roster capable of competing with the best teams in college football.
That doesn't always mean landing the highest-rated recruits. More often than not, it means landing the right recruits.
It means finding players who embody what the coaching staff wants Michigan State football to become. Players who fit the culture, buy into the vision, and are willing to put in the work required to succeed.
Forbish appears to be one of those players.
Along with the other 13 commitments in Michigan State's 2027 class, he represents another building block for the future of the program. His elite speed gives him a chance to become a difference-maker, and if his development continues on its current path, Spartans fans may be hearing the name Zach Forbish for years to come.
