Monday saw one of the most controversial rulings in the history of college football be reported. Earlier in the offseason, it was announced that Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby would be seeking treatment for gambling addiction. It was reported that he had bet on college football games, including Indiana Hoosiers games, when he was a rostered member of the team.
However, on Monday, ESPN reported that Sorsby would be eligible to compete this season following a two-game suspension after winning a ruling in the local courts.
“Breaking: A judge in district court in Lubbock County, Texas, has granted the injunction requested by Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby. He’s set to be eligible for the 2026 season. Sorsby cannot play in Texas Tech’s first two games, which was the penalty his legal team suggested to the NCAA.”
“The integrity of the game has to matter at some point.”
The NCAA expressed disappointment with the ruling via a statement, and writ large, college football fans across the country were just as unhappy with the ruling. Some took exception to the fact that, per an ESPN report, Sorsby took the under for one of his teammates’ passing yards in an October 2022 game, as well as the under for the first half of a Hoosiers football game in September 2023.
“Don’t ever believe the lie from Sorsby that he bet on Indiana because he wanted the game to mean more since he wasn’t playing. He bet the under on a teammate in his own position group,” one person posted on X.
“I refuse to watch anymore college football this year. Cause what tf do you mean he bet the under on his own team multiple times and about to suit up?? The integrity of the game has to matter at some point,” someone else added.
“Almost like he knew the game plan wasn’t an air raid and took advantage,” another person added.
The end of the NCAA as we know it?
ESPN contributor Josh Pate said on Monday that he fears the ruling marks the end of the NCAA as a governing body as we know it.
“The NCAA, that’s 4 letters. That’s nothing more,” Pate said. “That’s not an enforcement body. That’s not a governing body. It used to be. And truthfully, I don’t ever know that it had the teeth we thought it did. It was just— it barked really loud for a long time.
“And so schools were scared and got in line, and they were complicit. And how foolish do you feel today, by the way, if at any point in your recent history as a player or a coach or an institution, you self-reported violations or you admitted to violations or you just accepted NCAA sanctions? How foolish must you feel?”
This definitely feels like a seismic shift in the landscape of collegiate athletics; only time will tell what exactly that shift means.
