Texas Court Decision Is Disastrous For College Sports

The NCAA got a bombshell legal ruling on Monday, and it’s not going over well with everyone.

Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who by his own admission has a gambling problem, and who bet on his own team when he was at Indiana, won an injunction that theoretically will allow him to play in 2026.

Judge Ken Kirby, who is based in Lubbock, ruled that Sorsby would suffer “probable, imminent and irreparable injury” if he is banned.

It’s kind of unbelievable. Gambling has always been a red line since the Black Sox scandal of 1919. Whatever Kirby’s logic is, it hasn’t gone over well in the college football world.

Georgia and Nebraska have both banned all of their teams from scheduling Texas Tech, and there were rumors Monday that the other Big 12 schools might also boycott, and one rumor that some in the conference think Texas Tech should just be expelled.

Obviously, this is a big deal, and it has already intensified calls for Congress to regulate college sports. As it is, if you can bet on your own team, admit you have a gambling issue, and the NCAA can’t do anything about it, then basically, we’re in anything-goes land.
