Alabama AD Doubles Down on Kalen DeBoer Extension, Buyout Stakes

Alabama Athletic Director Greg Byrne isn’t worried about what people are saying.
There’s an expectation of excellence in Tuscaloosa, but when Nick Saban retired in this new landscape of college football, what worked in the past, wasn’t always going to work now.
That’s why Byrne signed head coach Kalen DeBoer to a contract extension.
With all the chatter about DeBoer possibly fleeing town and going to either Penn State or Michigan, Byrne and DeBoer were focused on a long-term partnership.
"Expectations at Alabama are high. That's what you sign up for when you come to Alabama. That hasn't changed," Byrne told Paul Finebaum last month. "What I also believe, though, is the idea of changing your coach every two to three years is absolutely ludicrous, and when you have a coach that you believe in, like we believe in Coach DeBoer, you want to have stability in that, and you will have a lot of really good times, and you'll also have challenging times.
Perhaps that statement was a veiled shot at fans and talking heads alike, calling for DeBoer’s job immediately after the Crimson Tide lost to Florida State in Week 1 of the 2025 season.
Now, DeBoer stays put in Tuscaloosa for the long haul, barring any unforeseen changes.
Should any of those unforeseen changes occur, it would end up being a pricey breakup.

If DeBoer were to be poached and leave for another job, he would end up forfeiting Alabama $24 million through January 29.
On the other side of the coin and Alabama fires him, then the university would end up owing him $67.5 million, which would be 90% of his remaining contract.
And given how Alabama’s adamance on mindful spending, that should tell you everything you need to know about the program’s plan for him.
Finebaum alluded to that buyout, Byrne acknowledged it, but doubled down on his belief in Coach DeBoer.
"It absolutely is," Byrne said. "What we're going to do is we know during the coming years, we believe we're gonna win a lot of games and have a lot of great experiences. We also know at some point there will be a speed bump. … Don't listen to the noise.”
Whatever may happen down the road, it’s that DeBoer is here for the near and distant future.
He’s managed to stack recruiting wins over the two and a half years he’s been in Alabama, along with a playoff appearance.
DeBoer’s vision still hasn’t fully materialized since he was still transitioning his own recruits, as well as the players who were there before him.
But now? There’s no more excuses.
And Byrne’s faith will be tested.
