Several programs were identified by CBS Sports as teams generating the most buzz ahead of 2026 and Florida, primed to enter the Jon Sumrall era, was among them.
College football’s most intriguing programs often generate the most offseason chatter, teams capable of climbing the national rankings or falling short of expectations. For all of Florida’s question marks entering Sumrall’s first season, there are just as many reasons for optimism.
The Gators are coming off a disappointing 4-8 season after which head coach Billy Napier was fired and their former five-star quarterback chose to hit the portal; also opting to transfer was top offensive target Eugene Wilson III, who left for LSU.
In addition, two cornerstones on the offensive line left for the NFL, but “still, there is real belief around the program after Florida cracked the top 25 in the CBS Sports 138, jumping 36 spots from where it finished last season,” CBS Sports writer Cody Nagel says.
A new coaching staff, an unsettled quarterback competition and transfer portal additions all coincide with a major recruiting surge — these are the bullet points driving the preseason narrative for Florida.
“Jon Sumrall arrives in Gainesville with a proven track record, owning a 43–12 career mark that includes a trip to the College Football Playoff last season,” Nagel offers. “Florida retained a number of talented pieces from the previous staff’s recruiting classes, but now it’s on Sumrall to extract more from a roster that has underachieved relative to its talent level.”
Many experts believe that if luck breaks Jon Sumrall’s way, the Gators can find themselves in the College Football Playoff picture. FanDuel’s odds that the Gators make it to the CFP are set at plus-370.
Since Sumrall arrived in Gainesville last November, perception has shifted significantly compared to the dreary outlook during Billy Napier’s final season. The former Tulane coach’s talk about restoring the winning mentality at Florida has resonated with Gator Nation, which now has high hopes entering the 2026 campaign.
Florida joins a list of teams that garner intrigue due to roster shakeups and coaching transitions, such as LSU, Notre Dame and USC.
