It’s Monday, and we are in the full swing of the summer offseason. That being said, football preview posts are ramping up. As always, our coverage is still going strong. Check out our original coverage and what we can find from the World Wide Web below.
San Jose State Preview
College Football News looks at the Spartans in this one. Offensively, the passing game will be a strength and keep defenses on their toes, and it’s a great system for WRs to shine. However, there isn’t much continuity from last year and they need to limit turnovers. For the defense, they also have to replace a lot, and hopefully can still be solid on third down. But they need to find a way to generate a pass rush consistently. CFN thinks San Jose State will be competing to make a bowl, but will ultimately fall short at 5-7.
Will Texas State surprise?
Texas State is jumping from the Sun Belt to the Pac-12, and even though it’s not official for another few weeks, they are already seeing benefits on the recruiting front. Four-star running back Daylon Gordon committed to the Bobcats last week, making him the highest-rated G6 commit at this point in recruiting rankings. While recruiting rankings should be fully evaluated at the end of cycles, it still bodes well that Texas State ranks 63rd in the team rankings, second among G6 programs.
Is the Pac-12 the top mid-major conference?
This article argues that it is. This states that the conference has three teams in the top 75 of the CBS Sports rankings of FBS teams, while featuring none below 120. This means the conference has an intriguing ceiling of teams without a low floor. The Pac-12 narrowly edges out the American, which places their top 3 teams in the top 67, but their highest-ranked teams are in the 50s rather than the 30s. Plus, two teams are below 120th in the rankings. The MW sits comfortably in 3rd, with two teams in the top 75, but unfortunately, four teams in the bottom 20.
Coaches share thoughts on the Group of 6 teams.
Athlon spoke with assistant college coaches, who anonymously share what they think about teams that fall under the Group of 6 umbrella. Coaches like Boise State’s athletes at the skill spots, but do wonder how they will reload in the trenches. They see that Dan Mullen can still develop quarterbacks and think UNLV should win the Mountain West this year. Meanwhile, a coach believes New Mexico will be a sleeper to win the league and be a in a good bowl game.
