Well, it’s another day and it’s another former Penn State commit flipping his commitment elsewhere. Last week, it was three-star corners Semajay Robinson and Zachary Gleason flipping to UVA and West Virginia. Today, it was four-star Tennessee wide receiver Jamir Dean flipping to Georgia.
Penn State landed a commitment from Dean on May 1, but Georgia shortly then after got involved. Dean made an official visit to Georgia two weekends ago, but he left Athens without committing to the Bulldogs. That and Dean then taking an official visit to Penn State the following weekend, and there was renewed optimism that the Nittany Lions would fend off Georgia. That, unfortunately for Penn State, didn’t end up happening.
No way to spin this one, folks, this is a big loss for the Nittany Lions. Dean was recently ranked the #126 player in the country by 247Sports, and is almost assuredly going to become a consensus four-star when Rivals updates their rankings in the next few weeks. He was a big recruiting win for Matt Campbell and Co. because it showcased their strengths — identifying under-ranked and/or under-recruited prospects and making them a priority before they blow up. But part of that process needs to be holding onto them once they commit, and that just didn’t happen here.
