The week begins with another huge recruiting win for James Franklin and the Virginia Tech Hokies. Over the weekend, linebacker Amarri Irvin decommitted from Notre Dame. This was news because Irvin recently visited Blacksburg, and the Hokies were considered a strong contender for him.

On Monday, Irvin made it official, flipping his commitment from Notre Dame to Virginia Tech. He had been committed to the Fighting Irish since November. Irvin is a three-star commitment via 247Sports. Rivals lists Irvin as a four-star prospect. In the 247Sports composite rankings, Irvin is a four-star.

The 6-foot-0, 220-pound Irvin plays at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Before transferring to IMG, Irvin played at the Woodward Academy in College Park, Georgia. At Woodward, Irvin was a teammate of cornerback Bryce Woods, another recent Virginia Tech commitment. The two were in Blacksburg together the first weekend of this month, which helped the Hokies close the gap on Notre Dame.

This is a big win on many fronts for the Hokies. They just went head-to-head with Notre Dame for a prospect and won. Notre Dame’s head coach, Marcus Freeman, is a former college and NFL linebacker. Virginia Tech has gone head-to-head with several top schools during this class and has come away with a few impressive wins.

Irvin is the first linebacker in VT’s 2027 class. Former head coach Brent Pry, who is now the defensive coordinator, also coaches linebackers. Pry was a big part of this recruitment, along with Franklin.

After Irvin’s commitment, the Hokies have the No. 7 class in the country for 2027. Irvin is commitment No. 25, and the Hokies still aren’t done.
