The Michigan State Spartans culture is slowly being reimplanted into the football program, thanks in large part to the new coaching staff.

The Spartans had lost their once-aggressive, sometimes-to-a-fault attitude that helped lead Mark Dantonio's teams to the College Football Playoff and multiple Big Ten championships. It was a hard-nosed era filled with tough, physical players who were ready to take the lid off any game.

That identity quickly faded following Dantonio's departure and was never fully rediscovered under the coaches who followed him. Mel Tucker and Jonathan Smith each had short tenures leading the Green and White, and for very different reasons, both are now gone and already becoming footnotes in Michigan State football history.

Now enters a man who has brought attitude and toughness with him for nearly two decades as a head coach. New Michigan State head coach Pat Fitzgerald has already done impressive work revitalizing that edge within the Spartans program and throughout Spartan Nation.

He's bringing in tough, physical players who may not always be the highest-rated recruits in the country but will give more effort on the field than many thought possible.

That description fits Michigan State's newest commitment perfectly: Don Spillers.

A three-star recruit from Martin Luther King High School in Detroit, Michigan, Spillers plays defensive back and will most likely line up at safety. However, his versatility allows him to play multiple positions, and his wrestling background gives him the toughness and physicality to make an impact wherever he's lined up.

Spillers holds an 87 rating from 247Sports, ranking him as the 13th-best recruit in the state of Michigan and the nation's 60th-ranked athlete. Those numbers remain relatively similar in the composite rankings, where he owns a 0.8700 score, ranking as the 14th-best prospect in Michigan, the 63rd-best athlete nationally, and the No. 881 overall prospect in the 2027 class.

The Spartans worked hard to secure Spillers' commitment, especially with Illinois making a full-court press to land the talented defender. In the end, Joe Rossi, James Adams, and Pat Fitzgerald were able to land their guy, further illustrating the respect and momentum this coaching staff is beginning to restore to the Michigan State brand.

Spillers visited East Lansing a few weeks ago before making a trip to Illinois shortly after. Last weekend, he followed that up with a visit to Louisville. Despite all the travel, recruiting pitches, and fan bases hoping he'd choose their school, Spillers ultimately landed with the Spartans.

Now the coaching staff's real work begins.

Spillers currently ranks tied for the fifth-highest-rated recruit in Michigan State's 2027 class according to 247Sports. This week alone has been a productive one for the Spartans, who secured commitments from their highest-rated recruit in Caleb Johnson, an offensive lineman, and now another top-10 class recruit in Spillers.

But in today's college football landscape, landing commitments is only the beginning. Developing players, helping them grow as young men, and retaining them in an era dominated by the transfer portal has become just as important as recruiting them.

For now, though, Spillers is East Lansing-bound, and Michigan State's 2027 recruiting class continues to gain momentum and improve week after week.
