Many may see Alabama’s 2027 recruiting numbers and be alarmed.
But head coach Kalen DeBoer doesn’t see a reason for concern.
Rivals recently posted a graphic on X, ranking the SEC’s recruiting classes for 2027, and Alabama was dead last.
The ranking is harsh on its surface, but perhaps you can understand where they’re coming from.

The Crimson Tide currently hold just eight commitments, with most of the class concentrated on offense and relatively little defensive depth committed so far.
Not only that, they lost out on Kenneth Simon II, the four-star linebacker who decommitted and flipped to rival Tennessee.
To the naked eye, it’s certainly not as enticing as Texas A&M’s list of 23 commitments.
At the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame banquet, DeBoer spoke on his recruiting efforts, citing that the number of commits should be higher, certain players just haven’t announced yet.
“Good number of guys, another big weekend this weekend,” DeBoer said. “Expect some more guys that haven’t announced that we are aware of will be with us.”

There’s been a tremendous push by Alabama to bring in elite five-star wide receiver Monshun Sales, who’s currently predicted to go to Indiana. Along with that, four-star receiver Osani Gayles was just predicted to land in Tuscaloosa.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Tide seem to be in a decent position to land defensive back Hayden Stepp, EDGE Antwan Jackson, and DL Mitchell Turner.
DeBoer continued, “Just getting the right guys, that’s really what it’s about. It’s getting the right players in. I think we did a good job of that the first couple years we were here. It shows up in their playmaking on the football field. We’ve played a lot of young guys that started on the field as freshmen or became starters or played starter reps… and looking for the development of those guys to pay off here this year
A few weeks ago, it was made known that the 2027 class wasn’t going to be loaded with recruits, due to Alabama’s ability to retain players and the moves it made in the transfer portal.
In addition, next season’s roster will feature 27 new members from the 2026 freshman class.
What this recruiting cycle has taught us is that Alabama is focusing more on quality instead of quantity.
Alabama isn’t abandoning recruiting volume. But as much fun as it is to fawn over the shiny new toy, it still has plenty of high-end recruits that the staff were heavily invested in.
In DeBoer’s first three cycles, he signed a total of 74 players and retained 64 of them, a strong retention rate in the modern transfer-portal era.
That points to a program that’s managing roster turnover effectively rather than overhauling it.
