As the fall sports scene in Fayetteville continues to slow down, the high school football playoffs are heating up.
Gray's Creek boys soccer saw its season end in Round 3 of the 6A East playoffs at the hands of Franklinton.
In high school football, three teams — Seventy-First, Jack Britt, and Cape Fear — remain after Terry Sanford and Trinity Christian dropped their Round 2 games to end their seasons.
As we gear up for winter sports and Round 3 of the NCHSAA football playoffs, here are six high school football nominees for 910Preps Athlete of the Week for Nov. 10-14.
Coaches, athletic directors, and parents are asked to submit weekly nominees along with a headshot photo of the nominee to jfmoore@gannett.com each week.
Voting will end of Thursday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m.
Jayson Franklin, Seventy-First football — Franklin, the South Florida commit, was all the offense Seventy-First needed in their Round 2 win over South Johnston, gaining 191 yards on 18 carries in his fifth game this season with more than 180 yards.
Eric Payne, Jack Britt football — Jack Britt's starting running back, Payne, didn't get in the end zone, but rushed for 131 yards in the Bucs' first playoff win since 2019.
Shon Pone, Seventy-First football — Pone, the star athletic junior, rushed for 100 yards on Friday night on 18 carries, and also scored a touchdown in the playoff win.
Geronimo Sanchez, Cape Fear football — Sanchez, the Colts' senior quarterback, tossed three touchdown passes in the Friday night win over Sanderson.
Gavin Stokes, Jack Britt football — Stokes, the Buccaneers QB, put up 96 total yards and accounted for Jack Britt's only two offensive touchdowns, earning one with his feet and the other through the air.
Landon Underwood, Cape Fear football — Underwood, Cape Fear's junior receiver, caught two touchdown passes in the Round 2 win over Sanderson.
