Rutgers vs. Illinois prediction, picks, odds
When the schedule came out, this looked like it was going to be one of the most challenging games on the slate. But Bret Bielema’s team has failed to live up to expectations, which had included the Illini in playoff conversations – that’s not happening now, mainly because Illinois’ defense has been poor, yielding 380.8 yards per game, third-to-last in the Big Ten ahead of Purdue and Rutgers. The Illini’s offense is more middle of the pack, averaging 377.4 yards per game. But quarterback Drew Altmyer is one of the best in the Big Ten, and that’s where the issue could be for the Scarlet Knights. Yes, Rutgers absolutely showed improvement against Purdue. But Ryan Browne is not as good of a QB as Altmyer and he still managed at times to pick apart the Scarlet Knights’ secondary. Altmyer also has an elite weapon to throw to in wide receiver Hank Beatty, who’s third in the conference with 690 receiving yards. I think that’s where the issue will be for Rutgers. The offense might be able to put up points against a weak defense, but can the defense avoid giving up too many? It might be tough for the Scarlet Knights to win two in a row, especially on the road. Illinois 42, Rutgers 34
