Where Colorado's 2027 class ranks after landing top rated commitment

Colorado football didn’t stay down for long on Tuesday.

After missing on four-star defensive lineman Tyler Alexander to Texas earlier in the day, Deion Sanders and his staff responded quickly by flipping four-star defensive tackle Ben’Jarvius Shumaker from Ole Miss. The 6-foot-3, 270-pound Mississippi product had been on Colorado’s radar for months, and his recent visit to Boulder this past weekend helped seal the deal.

The addition immediately impacts the recruiting landscape. Colorado now sits No. 3 in the Big 12 recruiting rankings per Rivals, trailing only Kansas State and Texas Tech. While Kansas State holds more total commits, Colorado has stacked higher-end talent with four four-star commits in the class.

Nationally, the Buffs are trending upward as well. Colorado ranks No. 35 via On3/Rivals and No. 37 per 247Sports, positioning itself ahead of programs like Duke, West Virginia and Ole Miss in one set of rankings.

Shumaker is now the top-rated commit in Colorado’s 2027 class. He surpasses previous headliner Li’Marcus Jones and becomes the centerpiece on the defensive front alongside fellow interior prospect Kenny Fairley.

With 16 total commits, Colorado continues to build one of the more intriguing classes in the Big 12. The response on Tuesday showed how quickly momentum can swing, and how aggressively Sanders and his staff are working to keep it.
