The Ohio State football team is honoring one of their most successful coaches this coming season. Former Buckeyes head coach Jim Tressel is getting enshrined into the Ohio Stadium Ring of Honor, per the school.
Tressel won a national championship at Ohio State, in 2002. Following his college coaching career, he entered politics and Tressel now serves as the Lieutenant Governor of the state of Ohio.
He is the third Buckeyes head coach to be honored at the stadium. The other two are the legendary Woody Hayes, and Paul Brown.
“Growing up in Ohio, Ohio Stadium was about as special a place as there could be for a Buckeye fan. Then, when you have the privilege of spending so many years on the field as a coach, you never really think about something like this. You just try to honor the tradition, respect the responsibility that comes with it, and do your very best each day,” Tressel said in part in a statement. “I grew up admiring Paul Brown and Woody Hayes, and they both meant so much to our family. To be recognized alongside these men is truly humbling.”
Tressel’s final season coaching at Ohio State came in 2010. He resigned his position in May 2011, after the school was involved in an NCAA investigation involving improper benefits. Tressel never took another head coaching job.
Tressel worked as head coach at Youngstown State, before he came to be the head coach for the Buckeyes. He later served as President of Youngstown State University.
“Jim Tressel’s impact on Ohio State is long-lasting and still ever-present on our campus. He is not only one of the most accomplished coaches in our school’s history but in the entire history of college football. What truly sets him apart is the way he led, taught, and served others,” Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork said.
Tressel will be honored by Ohio State on September 5. The Buckeyes play Ball State.
