The Michigan Wolverines made a big move on 2027 four-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert during his official visit last weekend. So much so that a couple recruiting insiders placed predictions for Michigan to land the 5-foot-10.5, 173-pounder from Cincinnati, Ohio when he makes his decision official next Wednesday, July 1.
But the in-state Ohio State Buckeyes are also putting up a fight. They hosted him for an official visit two weeks ago, and they also garnered a few recruiting predictions of their own at the time.
But it appears those picks may have been a bit premature, as another recruiting expert is calling his shot on several of the top uncommitted recruits in the 2027 recruiting class. In his article, Rivals’ Greg Smith ($) said he believes the Wolverines will eventually land Torbert’s commitment as well.
Here’s what Smith had to say:
“The top-100 prospect out of Cincinnati (Ohio) Princeton was the headliner at Michigan over the weekend. Coming out of the visit the Wolverines have captured the momentum away from Ohio State. Louisville is making a late push fueled by a strong NIL offer.
“But this is still a Michigan versus Ohio State battle. Torbert will have to weigh a better NIL opportunity in Ann Arbor against the ability to stay home and play for the Buckeyes.”
As Smith notes, Ohio State isn’t the only one trying to land the former Indiana commit, as Louisville has entered the sweepstakes for his services in the 11th hour. However, the Cardinals have not hosted Torbert for a visit and appear to be working primarily off financial leverage rather than a deep relationship with the staff.
Could that NIL deal ultimately sway him to Louisville? Nothing would shock me in this day and age, but the Wolverines and the Buckeyes are the clear top two schools as of today. With his commitment just one week away, it seems unlikely Louisville can close the gap without a visit in the books. Though in today’s recruiting landscape, a significant NIL offer can never be completely dismissed.
As Smith notes, this ultimately comes down to a straightforward question for Torbert — does he take what Michigan is offering, or does he stay home and play for the Buckeyes? He has stronger relationships with both those staffs than Louisville’s, which makes the Cardinals more of a wildcard than an actual threat, at least as of this writing.
Michigan already has three four-star prospects in the secondary in the 2027 class with cornerbacks Blake Jenkins and Darius Johnson, and nickel/safety Tavares Harrington. Adding Torbert — again, a Top 100 overall prospect who hails from the state of Ohio — would be a significant statement for the Wolverines’ recruiting operation led by new head coach Kyle Whittingham.
Do you think Torbert will commit to Michigan, the hometown Buckeyes, or pull a stunner and go to Louisville? Let me know what you think down in the comments below.
