A college football team lost in overtime and a resignation soon followed.

That resignation is of a Texas man who allegedly sent University of Louisville football coach Jeff Brohm threatening text messages following a Nov. 8 loss to Cal.

A Jefferson County grand jury indicted Brian Mandel on Nov. 10 on seven charges, six of them terroristic threatening, after police said he threatened UofL football coach Jeff Brohm.

Mandel, of Corpus Christi, served as the vice chair of the Corpus Christi Planning Commission, a position he held since August, with his board service beginning in 2020.

Mandel resigned from his position Nov. 13, city secretary Rebecca Huerta confirmed to The Courier Journal. He was on his second term, which would have ended next summer, Huerta said.

Court records show on Nov. 8, Mandel allegedly made “terroristic threats” against UofL football coach Jeff Brohm, his wife, his children and his brother Brian, “creating fear of death or serious physical injury.”

Court records show on Nov. 9, Mandel also allegedly threatened UofL quarterback Miller Moss, including making a threat to obtain money or property of a value of $10,000 “by threatening to inflict bodily injury” on the Cardinals quarterback and those associated with him.

UofL spokesperson John Karman confirmed to The Courier Journal that Mandel was arrested by UofL police Nov. 11.

Mandel entered a not-guilty plea during his Nov. 12 arraignment. Court records show he’s not allowed to drink alcohol, gamble or have contact with “the victim.” A pretrial conference is set in Jefferson Circuit Judge Tracy Davis’ court for Feb. 17.

Karman confirmed to The Courier Journal the alleged threats were made to Brohm via text message. When asked if Mandel’s text messages involved threats related to sports gambling, Karman said he did not “know all of the specifics of the texts, only that they involved threats against (Brohm and his family and Moss).”

The contents of those text messages have not been released.

Brohm said in his weekly press conference he wouldn’t discuss the messages allegedly sent by Mandel following the Cardinals’ 29-26 overtime loss to Cal.

“I don’t want to give too many details,” Brohm told reporters. “I don’t know if I’m allowed to, but it was a direct message to my phone right after the game with Cal. I’m not going to repeat what was said, but it was not good.

“You know, things directed to me, I’m fine with — but when it’s directed to my wife and family, that’s going over the line.”
