Since Deion Sanders became head coach, he has been an early adopter of several trends that have since become common in the new era of college football.

One of those trends is visiting recruits on the road, whether at their homes or high schools. Sanders has never left campus to recruit new players to his team, according to USA TODAY Sports. Now, other coaches are following Deion Sanders' lead.

Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti didn't visit recruits at home or at high schools this past winter, with a team spokesman telling USA TODAY Sports that the Hoosiers' calendar filled with College Football Playoff responsibility was the reason. New Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham also followed a similar winter plan to that of former Sanders protege and new Southern University head coach Marshall Faulk.

"I don't think there's a science to how it should be done," Faulk told USA TODAY Sports. "What I believe is, however you decide to do it, you should major in that way."

Is there a 'best' recruiting method?

Faulk, Sanders, and others believe that having the recruits come to you at the head coach's respective schools is the way to go. It is hard to argue with that strategy, given the transfer portal being open during the at-home visit period and the relatively new phenomenon of big recruiting weekends, in which multiple recruits come to campus at the same time.

Some might criticize this approach because it limits programs' and head coaches' ability to build deep connections with specific high schools, especially local ones. However, in the new age of college football, recruiting is more nuanced, and, as Faulk points out, there are several ways to approach it.
