Ron Bellamy has been around the Michigan Football program for a while, but now he is working in a new role as the Senior Director of Recruiting Relations. This week, Bellamy joined Jon Jansen on the In the Trenches podcast to talk about his new position and the work he’s doing to help the football program.
On his new role
Bellamy told Jansen he loves his new job and how he’s able to uniquely recruit for the program. He is trying to make sure Michigan keeps players from the state when they’re recruiting. Since he’s also played for the team, he’s drawing on his experience as an athlete to keep Michigan recruits in state.
On the importance of familiarity with current recruits
Bellamy said it’s been helpful for players already getting recruited to have a familiar face in the program. He also said was one of the best things in staying with the program to maintain success. He talked with former player and current Alabama general manager Courtney Morgan about moving into a position that isn’t coaching and tried to get as much information before making the switch.
On the challenges of his new role
Bellamy said he has been having to remind himself how he is still impacting the game. Unlike coaching where you’re on the field with players, this is a little different. Bellamy admitted he needed to remind himself he’s still impactful, just in a different way.
On how he thinks Saturdays will be in the fall
“A lot less stressful,” Bellamy said. While he doesn’t expect the competitive spirit to go away, he won’t have as much stress on game days. He knows he still has an impact on the guys playing and will have a role in their experience, he just won’t be down on the field coaching them.
On developing new contacts
Bellamy talked about the donors and how much they support the program. He said one of the biggest things he brings to the table is his experience and donors want to talk about the program and his experiences. Bellamy has been around a long time, so he told Jansen being able to talk about his different experiences has been helpful in developing new relationships to benefit the program.
On recruiting players who have family ties to Michigan
Jansen asked Bellamy about Tommy Carr playing for the Wolverines this season. Bellamy said it’s “surreal” to get to see him come through the program. Bellamy recalled seeing Carr as a baby and now he’s on the roster. Bellamy also talked about playing with Steve Frazier in Ann Arbor, the father of offensive lineman Blake Frazier, as well as Jonathan Goodwin, the father of wide receiver Channing Goodwin.
