Lane Kiffin and the No. 7 Ole Miss Rebels continued their push for the 2025 College Football Playoff in Week 12, defeating DJ Lagway and the Florida Gators 34–24. The win moved Ole Miss to 10–1 overall and 6–1 in SEC play as it heads into a Week 13 bye before facing Mississippi State in the regular-season finale.
Following the Rebels’ seventh win of the season against Oklahoma, Kiffin triggered an automatic one-year contract extension, a clause built into his deal. The extension keeps him under contract with Ole Miss through the 2031 season and adds a year worth $9.2 million, including $7.2 million guaranteed. Even so, Kiffin has continued to surface in coaching rumors for other programs.
While Ole Miss is well on its way to making the College Football Playoff, other SEC teams with championship hopes can’t say the same. The LSU Tigers fired Brian Kelly after suffering its third loss of the year, and Florida dismissed Billy Napier following a fourth. And as both programs continue their coaching searches, Kiffin’s name has surfaced as a potential candidate.
As rumors surrounding Kiffin continue, Ole Miss is actively working to keep its sixth-year coach even longer, eyeing an entirely new deal. But on a recent episode of ESPN’s “College GameDay” podcast, Pete Thamel reported that if an agreement isn’t reached before the Egg Bowl, Kiffin could very well be headed elsewhere.
“So this is Ole Miss’ quandary,” Thamel said. “If they don’t get a yes and a signature from Lane Kiffin this week on a new deal, it is going to signal that he is likely going to go elsewhere… If Lane Kiffin doesn’t commit and ends up committing elsewhere, or the appearance of committing elsewhere emerges, there would be a huge signal that if he doesn’t sign this week, that he’s looking elsewhere and potentially going to be going elsewhere.”
