Could Nike’s “The Opening” help LSU flip Easton Royal

Easton Royal is the five-star, No. 1 wide receiver in the nation and remains one of LSU’s top remaining targets in the 2027 recruiting class. Royal is still committed to Texas, but LSU has significantly closed the gap. Many recruiting experts now believe the race is essentially even, while some even feel Texas has slipped to third and LSU should be considered the favorite.
Of course, all of that remains speculation until Royal and his family announce a change in his commitment.
Following his official visit to Texas, Royal was asked about the status of his commitment. He responded by saying his commitment was “firm” for now, but added, “Me and my mom still got things to talk about.”
Since making that statement, the feeling around his recruitment has been that Royal is genuinely trending toward the Tigers.
Royal is currently in Oregon competing at Nike’s premier 7-on-7 event, The Opening, which features some of the nation’s top recruits. The competition is loaded with talent, and LSU has two commitments participating as well—Louisiana’s No. 1 running back Trey Martin and No. 2 quarterback Peyton “Pop” Houston.
Not only are Martin and Pop competing in the event, but they’re also teammates with Royal.
Royal is getting a firsthand look at what LSU’s future freshman class could look like if he chooses to join it. Sometimes the best recruiters in a class are the players themselves, and no relationship is more important to a wide receiver than the one with his quarterback.
With Pop, Martin, and Royal all being Louisiana natives and among the nation’s top prospects—Royal being the only one not currently committed to LSU—this creates a tremendous opportunity. Not only can they showcase their talent together on the field, but they can also give Royal a glimpse of the offensive firepower LSU is building around its future stars.
Offensively, these three are among the jewels of the 2027 class. The only missing piece at The Opening is tight end Ahmad Hudson.
Royal, Pop, and Martin have already started turning heads during the event. Reports indicate they’ve been overwhelming opposing defenses. Pop uncorked the longest throw of the day, connecting on a 67-yard bomb.
Martin has had multiple clips circulate online showcasing his explosiveness and ability to make defenders miss in space. Pop and Royal also connected for a beautiful 15-yard back-shoulder fade touchdown, with Royal creating separation through an outstanding route and Pop placing the ball exactly where only his receiver could make the catch.
While these young men are obviously competing to win games, it’s probably safe to assume Pop and Martin are also hoping to secure a major victory off the field.
Events like The Opening can play a significant role in a recruit’s decision-making process. Royal has already stated that if he chooses LSU, he wants to room with Houston so they can begin building chemistry and gain a deeper understanding of each other’s game.
This also isn’t the first time they’ve shared the field. Pop and Royal were teammates on the Under Armour All-America team following last season.
Scholarship opportunities, player development, coaching staffs, and NIL opportunities all matter to elite recruits. However, these aren’t a five-star prospect and two three-star players barely inside the national rankings. These are three players ranked among the Top 10 nationally at their respective positions. Individually, they’ll all have plenty of opportunities regardless of where they play.
LSU will certainly do everything necessary to keep Royal home, but what can separate the Tigers from the competition that isn’t entirely in the staff’s control?
The players surrounding him.
Texas cannot offer Royal the opportunity to build alongside an elite hometown quarterback and running back who have already proven they can produce with him on the biggest stages. Royal has the chance to do something many of LSU’s legendary wide receivers never had the opportunity to experience—arriving on campus in the same recruiting class as both his quarterback and his running back.
Nothing is guaranteed in today’s college football landscape, especially in the transfer portal era. But Royal has an opportunity not only to become a special player, but to be part of something special by joining LSU alongside an elite in-state quarterback and running back with whom he has already developed chemistry against top-tier competition.
As the recruiting dead period is now in effect, relationships like these can become difference-makers.
How do you feel about Royal, Pop, and Martin playing together? Do you think their chemistry can push LSU over the top and ultimately secure Royal’s commitment?
