Trinidad Chambliss says Lane Kiffin was not truthful about Ole Miss

One of college football‘s biggest storylines in 2025 was the departure of former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin. Kiffin’s exit reflected poorly on him, as he left for SEC rival LSU. Since then, he has offered multiple explanations in what appears to be an attempt to justify his decision.

Kiffin cited what he described as a lack of diversity support in Oxford, Mississippi, as one reason for leaving. Those comments eventually caught the attention of Trinidad Chambliss.

In May, Kiffin spoke with Vanity Fair about the challenges of recruiting to Ole Miss.

“‘Hey, coach, we really like you. But my grandparents aren’t letting me move to Oxford, Mississippi,'” Kiffin said.

He then claimed that this perception does not exist at LSU.

“That doesn’t come up when you say Baton Rouge, Louisiana,” he said. “Parents were sitting here this weekend saying the campus’ diversity feels so great: ‘It feels like there’s no segregation. And we want that for our kid because that’s the real world.'”

Chambliss defends Ole Miss

Many viewed Kiffin’s comments as an attempt to repair his image. However, he did so at the expense of the community that gave him an opportunity. Chambliss, his former quarterback, was later asked about the remarks. He firmly disagreed, publicly rejecting Kiffin’s characterization of Oxford.

Ole Miss Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss (6) signals a first down after his run against the Miami Hurricanes during their Vrbo Fiesta Bowl matchup at State Farm Stadium on Jan. 8, 2026.

“Me, personally, I don’t agree. I don’t think that what he said was truthful,” Chambliss said. “The Oxford community is nothing but love and they care about their people no matter what they look like: brown, black, purple, yellow, you know what I mean?”

Kiffin’s word shouldn’t be taken seriously

Kiffin is not exactly known for his honesty. Multiple former employers have criticized him for being dishonest, among other things. Most famously, the late Al Davis had harsh words for Kiffin.

Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing at all. At the very least, Kiffin could have simply been honest about why he left. He wanted a pay raise that Ole Miss likely was not willing to match.

His departure proved so controversial that lawmakers proposed a “Lane Kiffin rule” as part of the current “Protect College Sports Act” under review in the U.S. Congress. That’s hardly a distinction Kiffin wants attached to his name.

At the end of the day, regardless of why Kiffin left Ole Miss, he handled his departure poorly. Nothing he says now will change the way he chose to leave.

There is no reason to drag the Ole Miss faithful down with him.
