Meet Florida blue-chippers powering Texas A&M's No. 1 recruiting push

Texas A&M's historic recruiting haul in Florida just got a lot better.

IMG five-star wide receiver Eric McFarland, the No. 5 ranked player on the USA TODAY Florida Network top 100, committed to the Aggies on June 28.

Texas A&M now has commitments from six Florida players in the 2027 class, including four of the top five.

McFarland joins a ridiculously talented class, that includes St. Thomas Aquinas offensive tackle Mark Matthews (No. 1), IMG edge rusher Zyron Forstall (No. 2), Jesuit linebacker Kaden Henderson (No. 4), Jones edge rusher Fred Ards III (No. 28) and West Boca safety Loia Valade (No. 62).

No school in the NIL era has ever had this kind of success landing the Sunshine State's top talent.

Here's a closer look at the Aggies elite Florida class:

OT Mark Matthews

Matthews is a consensus 5-star, and is ranked as the No. 1 tackle in the country by both 247Sports and Rivals. The Fort Lauderdale native's recruitment was a battleground as his hometown Hurricanes sent the house, but the Aggies got this one done despite being further away from home and offering a significantly less competitive NIL package than Miami.

Matthews is the crown jewel of Texas A&M's class. He's the third-highest ranked recruit in Aggies history, just behind Myles Garrett. Not only did they beat one of the nation's best recruiters in Miami OL coach Alex Mirabal, Texas A&M did it while being outbid — all while Miami is right down the road from Matthews' high school (and has even operated as a pipeline to Miami in years past). For Elko & Co., getting Matthews to throw Miami's hat to the side just meant a little bit more.

EDGE Zyron Forstall

Texas A&M long pushed hard for Forstall, and his only official visit this cycle was to College Station. He was named to both the Under Armour All-America Game and the Polynesian Bowl and tallied 5.0 sacks with 9.0 tackles for loss through nine games as a junior. The consensus 5-star was being pursued by USC, Miami, and Ohio State, but the Aggies got a commitment after three different visits.

Lane Kiffin increased pressure for the New Orleans native after taking the LSU job, and Notre Dame also hosted him for a visit. In the end, Forstall's visits to Texas A&M got them over the hump.

"I just kind of felt at home there," Forstall told us back in March. "It was an electric stadium there when I went to watch the game. It was amazing. I get along with the coaches well. I camped there over the summer and I felt really comfortable. I felt like my development would get way better there."

LB Kaden Henderson

Henderson is one of the more polished players this cycle, and tallied 59 tackles with 13.0 TFL, 9.0 sacks, four PBU, and two forced fumbles while being named to the Under Armour All-America Game and the Polynesian Bowl. His recruitment was a slow burn, with six different programs having a real shot at one point this spring. Notre Dame and Miami were at the front of the pack with Texas A&M, and LSU bumped Alabama out of his Top 5.

Henderson noted that Notre Dame already had two linebacker's committed, and that may be an issue by the time he's ready to commit. When the Irish saw both of those committed linebackers walk back their pledges, the race for Henderson narrowed between Notre Dame and the Aggies.

Henderson's commitment was another statement win in Florida because they beat Notre Dame. The Irish have done incredibly well in the state this cycle, landing four different top-50 players and coining the term FloridaDame as they raid the state. Texas A&M got the last laugh, adding another national name and shoring up another top-5 player in the state. After committing, he told us that Associate Director of Recruiting David 'Pop' Cooney is the reason that the Aggies are closing at a high clip in Florida.

WR Eric McFarland

The Las Vegas native is a rare player who has spent his entire high school career at IMG. The 5-foot-8, 177-pounder is a five-star recruit and No. 6 wide receiver in the nation on the 247Sports composite rankings.

Despite extended time in Florida and his west coast ties, Texas A&M was able to hold off some of the nation’s premier programs for McFarland’s commitment. McFarland took official visits to Georgia, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Florida in May and early June. McFarland has spoken highly of the Aggies development and use of slot receivers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver. Concepcion was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

EDGE Fred Ards III

Jones DL Fred Ards III jogs off the field after a strip sack in a game against Lake Wales, Oct. 10, 2025.

The 6-4½, 220-pound edge rusher is a consensus four-star recruit and the No. 9 ranked edge rusher in the nation on the 247Sports composite rankings. Originally scheduled to take several official visits in June, Ards committed to Texas A&M on June 2, following his official visit to College Station.

Ards, who likely will play outside linebacker at the next level, had 80 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 11 sacks in 2025 and helped Jones reach its second consecutive Class 4A state title game. He cited his close relationship with Aggies defensive line coach and co-defensive coordinator Elijah Robertson as a key reason for his commitment.

S Loia Valade

Valade, who transferred to West Boca from Tennessee for his senior season, is a three-star recruit and No. 49 safety in the nation on the 247Sports composite rankings. He announced his commitment to the Aggies over Miam, Florida and Auburn on June 2.

Valade praised his relationship with the coaching staff and safeties coach Ishmael Aristide.  He caught 29 passes for 456 yards and five touchdowns to go along with 21 tackles, two interceptions and three passes defended at McCallie in 2025.
