We live in a college football world of lists, rankings, and countdowns. Many players on Notre Dame’s roster have been talked about and written about over the last few months — so let’s fall in line.

This will be my official Top 20 Notre Dame Football Players ranking. I will unveil each player, and list the three things I like about them. It seems simple enough, but I have no doubt that some of these ratings will be highly criticized, but you can always share your thoughts in the comments below.

#13 CJ Carr QB

He chose Notre Dame

It would have been insanely easy for this elite high school quarterback who played football in the state of Michigan to have gone to the University of Michigan. Saline is right down the road from Ann Arbor, and after a quick Google search, it’s my understanding that CJ is the grandson of Lloyd Carr (who knew?!). Michigan felt like a no-brainer to some, but after more and more visits to South Bend, CJ fell in love with everything Notre Dame had to offer on and off of the field — and that’s what he picked.

His relationship with Marcus Freeman

We are probably still too familiar with the cold war Brian Kelly had with all of his quarterbacks, to understand how much of a detriment that is to a program. This certainly isn’t the case with Marcus Freeman and CJ Carr. I just talked about CJ choosing Notre Dame, but a big part of that was choosing Marcus Freeman. You could see it in the way they interacted on Bussin With The Boys. I don’t know how many of you actually know how BAD it was when CJ got hurt in practice, but it sounded like there was a moment when CJ might have been leaving the program. His relationship with Freeman (and his with the family) saved a bad situation from getting out of hand. CJ has immense trust in Marcus and Marcus has immense trust in CJ — and that’s what’s needed to win at an elite level.

This is a football dude

The recent testimonials from onlookers at the Manning Passing Academy put a giant stamp on the statement… CJ Carr is a football guy. He knows the game inside and out, and is constantly working on himself physically and mentally. He knows the game and because of his heritage, he had a better understanding of the game earlier than most, and yet he isn’t resting on that knowledge — he keeps trying to improve it. His coaches back him and his teammates back him, and a big part of that is because he’s all in on football.
