The Oklahoma Sooners have been busy putting together quite the 2027 recruiting class, with an impressive 26 commits in early July. However, OU got the 2028 recruiting class started with a bang on Friday, securing their quarterback for the cycle.
The Sooners landed a commitment from Bergen Catholic High School’s Trey Tagliaferri, a four-star quarterback prospect, according to Rivals. Tagliaferri hails from Colts Neck, New Jersey, and he checks in at 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds.
Tagliaferri originally committed to Notre Dame, but he decommitted from the Fighting Irish after less than a week. Now, the Sooners, with offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and quarterbacks coach John Kuceyeski leading the way, have flipped their preferred signal-caller in the class from another blue blood program.

Oklahoma can now build the ’28 class around Tagliaferri, as he’s the only commit the Sooners have past the ’27 class. Arbuckle and Kuceyeski did the work to impress Tagliaferri early in the process, and now they’ll look to hold onto him until December of 2027. The duo has developed an encouraging habit of managing to get the guy they want in a given cycle, whether that player is a well-known prospect, or a potential diamond in the rough.
If OU can eventually sign him in 18 months, Tagliaferri will join what the Sooners hope will be a long line of stellar QBs under Arbuckle and Kuceyeski’s tutelage. Currently the Sooners have four quarterbacks on the roster in starter John Mateer, true freshman heir-apparent Bowe Bentley, and backups Whitt Newbauer and Jett Niu. Oklahoma also has two committed signal-callers in the 2027 class, in Jamison Roberts, out of Alabama, and local product Noah Smith. Now, Tagliaferri becomes the potential latest passer in that pipeline, and Sooner Nation will get to watch as the 2028 class grows around him.
