The Texas Longhorns and head coach Steve Sarkisian were dealt some unfortunate recruiting news as safety Greedy James flipped to the LSU Tigers.
Originally pledging to the Longhorns on Dec. 3, it wasn’t a quick process to change his mind. However, it was clear the safety was keeping his options open, taking official visits with the Tigers (June 5) and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (June 12).
While Texas must now move on, this loss certainly stings. At 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds, he is a four-star recruit, the No. 28 safety and the No. 320 player in the nation, according to Rivals Industry Rankings.
After flipping to the Tigers, James spoke to Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman to explain his decision. He credited the culture and coaching staff under Lane Kiffin as some of the biggest factors.
“What mattered to me most was being where I wanted to be the most. At LSU, I loved the culture on and off the field,” James said. “They have a great coaching staff and they feel like father figures, especially Coach [Corey] Raymond. He’s one of the best in the game.”
The defender also added that he and his family also grew up fans of the Tigers, saying, “It’s cool that they can watch me there.”
Even without James in the picture, though, the Longhorns are putting together an impressive 2027 recruiting class. With 21 commitments, they rank seventh in the nation and third in the SEC.
However, the only safety currently in the group is four-star Junior Tu’upo. According to Rivals, four-star Adryan Cole is the only other uncommitted safety they have an offer out for. If the Longhorns want to add at the position, they may need to orchestrate a flip of their own.
